Clay Bar and Paint Decontamination in Norwalk, CA: get the grit out of the clear coat

If the paint feels rough after a wash, the dirt is in the clear coat, not on it. AMJ Detailing & Auto Spa decontaminates the paint with a clay bar at your Norwalk driveway, before any sealant, coating or polish goes on. Call or text (562) 341-8939.

What you get with clay bar and paint decontamination

  • Wash first, so the clay only meets bonded dirt
  • Iron remover on the paint and wheels
  • Clay bar with lubricant, panel by panel
  • Tar, sap, overspray and rail dust lifted
  • Glass clayed too
  • Protection put back on afterward

The visit, in three frames

Clay Bar and Paint Decontamination at your driveway, in the order it happens.

  1. Iron remover on a white car door turning purple where brake dust had bonded to the paint

Step 1: Wash and iron remover

After the wash, the iron remover turns purple where brake dust has bonded to the paint and dissolves it.

  2. Clay bar on a lubricated blue hood, flipped to show the specks of contamination it picked up

    Step 2: Clay with lubricant

The clay glides on a wet panel and picks up what the wash left: you can see it on the bar.

  3. Microfiber towel spreading spray sealant on a smooth blue hood reflecting a palm tree

Step 3: Protect the smooth paint

Clay strips whatever protection was there, so a sealant goes back on the same visit.

What is bonded to Norwalk paint

Iron particles from brake dust on the freeways. Tar flicked up on Firestone Boulevard and Imperial Highway. Tree sap from the blocks around Holifield Park. Overspray from a nearby paint job. These sit in the clear coat; a wash slides over them, and a sealant applied on top of them seals them in.

How we do it

After the wash, the clay bar is worked over the wet paint panel by panel with lubricant. Each pass picks up the grit you can feel. The paint comes out glass-smooth, and anything applied afterward (sealant, coating, polish) bonds to clean clear coat instead of dirt.

On its own, or in a package

The clay bar is included in the Exterior Detail. Booked on its own it is the first step before a ceramic coating or paint correction, for cars from Cerritos College to Vista Verde Park.

Is clay bar and paint decontamination what your car needs?

Book this when

  • The hood feels like fine sandpaper after a wash
  • Tree sap, tar dots or overspray on the paint
  • The car is getting a coating or a polish and needs clean paint first

Pick something else when

  • The marks are swirls or scratches: clay does not remove those, correction does
  • Rings and spots on the glass and paint: that is water spot removal
  • You want the whole outside done: the Exterior Detail includes the clay bar

After we leave: how to keep it that way

  1. Keep the protection on

Clay leaves bare paint. The sealant we apply is what keeps the next layer of grit from bonding.

  2. Wash before it builds up

Contamination that is rinsed off weekly never bonds. Run your hand over the hood now and then.

  3. Clay once or twice a year

A car parked outside in this area usually needs it before each new coat of protection.

Clay Bar and Paint Decontamination questions from Norwalk drivers

Does a clay bar scratch paint?

Not when it is used wet, with lubricant, by someone who does it every week. Clay bar treatment at your Norwalk driveway is the standard way to decontaminate paint before protection.

How do I know my car needs it?

Wash it, dry it, then run your fingertips over the hood in a plastic bag. If it feels gritty, the clear coat is contaminated.

How often?

Once or twice a year for a car in Norwalk that gets regular washes, more if it sits outside near trees or a freeway.
